Eye herpes, medically known as ocular herpes, can have serious consequences, including vision loss, if neglected. This infection, usually caused by the Herpes Simplex Type 1 virus, affects the cornea, the transparent layer of the eye.
What is Eye Herpes?
It is a viral infection caused by the Herpes Simplex virus of the eyelids, conjunctiva, or most commonly the corneal layer. Once the virus enters the body, it waits in a dormant mode in the nerve roots and becomes active again when the immune system is weakened. The most common type is epithelial keratitis (affecting the top layer of the cornea). Deeper stromal keratitis can cause permanent visual impairment.
What are the Symptoms of Eye Herpes?
- Severe pain and constant tearing in the eye
- Hypersensitivity to light (photophobia)
- Stinging sensation as if there was sand in the eye

- Swelling and redness on the eyelid
- Redness in one eye (usually only one eye is affected)
What Causes Eye Herpes?
It is the reactivation of the Herpes Simplex virus already present in the body. Triggers: extreme stress and fatigue, sunlight (UV rays), febrile illnesses, eye trauma, hormonal changes.
Eye Herpes Treatment
Treatment is with antiviral eye drops, ointments or oral tablets. The use of cortisone drops without medical supervision is definitely not recommended as it may cause the spread of the virus.
Is Eye Herpes Contagious?
It carries the risk of contagion when it is active. The use of shared towels, pillowcases or make-up should be avoided. If you have lip herpes, do not touch your eyes.
